The Weeknd’s HBO Series ‘The Idol’ Met With Intense Backlash Over “Worse Sex Scene In History” + Sources Claim The Singer’s Alleged “Egomaniacal” Behavior On Set Made Him Difficult To Work With
Looks like “The Idol” is at risked of being scrapped.
According to reports, the newest HBO drama series, co-created by pop super star The Weeknd and “Euphoria” director Sam Levinson, is in talks of being canceled after its second episode aired recently.
Reportedly, rumors the show might get dropped began following massive criticism over the intense sex scene featured in the second episode. The project stars The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, playing the role of cult leader named Tedros who is enthralled with emotionally turbulent pop singer named Jocelyn, played by Lily Rose Depp. Despite the program being highly anticipated – opening to one of the networks biggest series debuts with 9130,000 viewers, reports say that fans and critics were less than pleased with the follow up episode.

One report notes that show was labeled “comically bad” on review sites, and dropped around 100,000 viewers from is June 4th debut. While it’s not been confirmed, it’s suggested in the report that The Weeknd is rumored to not be planning a season 2 return due to the harsh critiques. A source reportedly seemed to support this speculation, claiming that the series was never mean to be long term, reportedly stating:
“This was never meant to be a long-running show, it was always … a limited series.”

Another source inside HBO rebutted, however, saying never say never. They reportedly told media outlets:
“The door is definitely still open — it’s definitely not a decision [yet]. At this point, this is normal in our process … we’re only two episodes in.”

In addition to less than stellar reviews, it seems there could possibly have been mounting tension on the set as well. With conflicting stories, some sources condemned the Grammy award winner for being “egomaniacal”, while others praised his spirit and hospitality. Sources reportedly shared their various experiences working with the Weeknd, with one stating it was:
“not an ideal experience … and not one I am eager to repeat,”

While another claimed the artist was “beloved”, adding:
“He literally opened up his home for the cast and crew. Almost the entire show was shot inside his home.”

As far as whether or not the show will actually make the cut for a second season, the decision will reportedly be left up to HBO’s head honcho Casey Bloys. A source reportedly spoke on the matter, stating:
“The only person who makes the decision [about a second season] is the head of HBO, Casey Bloys, and he is optimistic.”
It does not seem The Weeknd has spoken publicly about the negative reviews at this time.
