Michael K. Williams – Creator Of ‘The Wire’ Requests Leniency for Man Charged In Actor’s Death: ‘No Possible Good Can Come From Incarcerating A 71-Year-Old Soul’
David Simon – co-creator of the hit series ‘The Wire’ is asking a Manhattan judge to give leniency to one of the men who’s being charged with the 2021 drug overdose death of actor Michael K. Williams.
In 2022, Carlos Macci along with four other men were charged in connection to the actor’s death. All four men have pled guilty. The court has recommended a 10-year sentence for Macci, who has been in jail since his arrest in February 2022. Macci’s sentencing is scheduled for later this month.
According to reports, David Simon sent a three-page letter to Judge Ronnie Abrams on behalf of Macci, pleading for a shorter sentence.
Simon wrote,
“What happened to Mike is a grievous tragedy. But I know that Michael would look upon the undone and desolate life of Mr. Macci and know two things with certainty: First, that it was Michael who bears the fuller responsibility for what happened. No possible good can come from incarcerating a 71-year-old soul, largely illiterate, who has himself struggled with a lifetime of addiction.”

Simon recalled how Michael K. Williams revealed his struggles with addiction to a producer on ‘The Wire’ during the show’s third season and how they agreed to help him.
The screenwriter expressed,
“Then, to stay at work — which was, in fact, a stabilizing influence in his life — he readily agreed to let us help him address his drug use. Going so far as to seek the constant companionship of a crew member whose job was to assure some distance between Mike and temptation.”
Simon also referred to Williams as,
“one of the finest actors with whom I have had the honor to collaborate and one of the most thoughtful, gracious and charitable souls I could ever call a friend… I never failed to see him take responsibility for himself and his decisions.”
Simon noted that his relationship with Williams,
“convinces me that he would want me to write this letter.”
Macci’s lawyer, Benjamin Zeman, reportedly requested that Simon write the letter of leniency. Zeman said he asked the producer because,
“he’s been such a thoughtful and eloquent voice about what the failure of the war on drugs has wrought, and I knew of his relationship with Mr. Williams and all that Mr. Williams had spoken about this subject during the course of his life.”
As previously reported, “The Wire” star died at the age of 54 on Sept. 6, 2021, after he allegedly overdosed on a combination of heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine. Williams was found dead in his Brooklyn home.
