Tory Lanez’s Behavior Towards Megan Thee Stallion After Shooting Was A “Major” Factor In 10 Year Prison Sentence + Rapper Speaks Out & Launches “Free Tory” Merch: ‘I Have Always Maintained My Innocence’

Seems like rapper Tory Lanez could have somewhat avoided his lengthy jail stay.

According to a reporter covering the trial, the presiding judge made it very clear how impactful the musician’s post shooting actions were in deciding his 10 year prison sentence.

In case you’re unfamiliar, 31-year-old Canadian rapper Tory Lanez (real name Daystar Peterson) was recently sentenced to a decade behind bars for shooting fellow rapper Megan Pete, aka Megan Thee Stallion, 28, back in 2020 following an argument. Many have since debated whether or not the musician’s sentence was fair, though he was convicted of three felonies. Internet users have held polarizing debates discussing how big of a role Megan played in Lanez incarceration.

According to legal affairs journalist Meghann Cuniff, who has been covering the trial since it began however, it seems it was Lanez actions himself that held the most weight in the judge’s decision. Cuniff recently shared that the judge emphasized the musician’s post shooting conduct” and how it was a “major” factor when considering how long he would serve in jail. She stated:

“It’s hard to say how much [remorse] would’ve effected his sentence but the judge made really clear he thought that the post shooting conduct was a major aggravating factor in the case, he even used the word major.”

And continued:

“The idea that he would’ve gotten 10 years if he just kept quiet about the whole thing, I think that’s kind of out of the question. I’m sure he would’ve gotten a lesser sentence. The judge really sent the message that he thought the post shooting conduct was a real issue.”

The journalist went on to discuss how the judge referenced the legal implications of Lanez blatantly showing no regret for his actions. Reportedly, the judge referenced the phone call that Lanez made apologizing to Megan’s then bff Kelsey Nicole – who was also present for the shooting – during sentencing. If you recall, the rap star contacted Kelsey from jail after the incident, explaining how he was too intoxicated and didn’t mean to harm anyone. Despite the admission, Lanez went on to publicly vilify Megan, actively denying the he or Kelsey shot her and often trying to cast doubt over her account of the situation in its entirety.

Lanez also seemingly tried to intimidate Megan in other ways, possibly in an attempt to get her to recant her statements. The rapper referenced the shooting in music, instigated several online confrontations with the “Savage” artist, and even showed up at a Rolling Loud Concert he wasn’t scheduled to be at to perform directly after her. During this time, Lanez was arrested several times for violating the restraining order Megan had against him and speaking about the trial publicly, disregarding the courts prohibiting either party from doing so.

In the end, DNA evidence, several eye witness accounts, and testimonies from both Megan and Kelsey ultimately resulted in a guilty conviction. Apparently due strongly to his own actions after the shooting, Lanez will be required to serve at least 85% of his sentence as its required in the state of California. The rapper released a statement to his instagram after being sentenced. Maintaining the stance that he didn’t pull the trigger, he wrote:

“I have never let a hard time intimidate me. I will never never let no jail time eliminate me. Regardless of how they try to spin my words, I have always maintained my innocence and I always will.”

Adding:

“This week in court I took responsibility for all verbal and intimate moments that I shared with the parties involved. … That’s it.

In no way shape or form was I apologizing for the charges I’m being wrongfully convicted of. I remain on the stance that I refuse to apologize for something that I did not do.

I’ve faced adversity my whole life and every time it looked like I would lose, I came out on top. This is nothing but another moment where my back is against the wall and I refuse to stop fighting till I come out victorious.”

Lanez also thanked his fans and family at the end of the post, vowing to see them soon. In a subsequent upload, the rapper also launched “Free Tory” merchandise, which is now available for fans to buy from his website.
