Dwyane Wade Confirms He’s Been Approached By Democrats To Run For Senator In Florida: ‘It’s Just Conversation’
NBA hall of famer Dwyane Wade could be adding politician to his resume in the future.
The 41-year-old athlete recently confirmed that the Democrat party in Florida has expressed interest in him running for a Senate seat on their behalf in 2024.

Reportedly, rumors that Dwyane Wade was being eyed to join the political ranks began circulating back in May of this year. NBC news reportedly stated that Wade along with fellow former basketball star Grant Hill were in discussion among Democrats to challenge their current “far-right” Senator Rick Scott. A veteran of the political group reportedly stated they they needed “different kinds of candidates with pre-existing profiles to mount statewide campaigns” in order to have a chance at defeating Scott, and believes Wade fits the bill.

In a recent interview, the former Miami heat player addressed his potential future in politics, admitting that he “heard” about the discussions and has been approached by political donors. However, casting a rather uncertain shadow over the idea, he reportedly stated about the matter:
“I mean, it’s just conversation…’Hey, you would be good for,’ ‘Hey, we can see you in,’ ‘We would love to have you in.’”
Adding:
“It’s things that I’m passionate about that I will speak out on and speak up for. And so I don’t play the politician games. I don’t know a lot about it.”
Wade ultimately didn’t confirm nor deny if he would take running for office seriously, but did clarify how important using his platform correctly is. Reportedly, he continued:
“I also understand that I have a role as an American citizen and as a known person to be able to highlight and speak on things that other people may not be able to because they don’t have the opportunity to do this.”

According to the report, one major factor of the heightened interest in a Wade political run is due to his LGBTQ+ advocacy. Back in 2020, the entertainers trans daughter Zaya Wade went public with her gender change journey, which Wade and his wife Gabrielle Union have since become loud supporters of. However, Wade also recently opened up about having to move his family from the sunshine state to California due to increasingly aggressive laws passed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Scott, seeking to vastly limit LGBTQ+ rights. He reportedly stated:
“I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions…Obviously, the tax [situation] is great. Having Wade County is great. But my family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there. And so that’s one of the reasons why I don’t live there.”
