Addiction can be a hard thing to overcome.
During a recent interview with The Art of Dialogue, Bow Wow candidly discussed his previous addiction to lean and how he had no clue that his body had become dependent on the substance. For those who may be unaware, lean is a popular drug beverage within the hip hop community that’s prepared by mixing prescription-grade cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine with your drink of choice, such as a carbonated soda or juice. Over recent years, rappers have started to warn fans about the dangers of the infamous drink, with Bow Wow, 36, being the latest to share how lean negatively impacted his health.
He said,
“I was sipping so much syrup, bruh. And I said this too like, right after Mac Miller had died. I spoke on that sh*t, I was drinking that sh*t like crazy. If you go back and watch ‘The Road to Platinum’ series on BET, you’ll see so many white Styrofoam cups. … I was losing my f*cking mind. That lean sh*t had me f*cked up. I was just always irritated.”
Bow Wow, real name Shad Moss, then recalled how his heavy drinking of lean ultimately caused him to have to step away from work.
“I don’t have an addictive personality. So, I’ll never forget, me and Chris [Brown] we were on our tour. I was co-headlining with [Chris] Brown and the opening night was in Cincinnati [and] when I got off stage, I collapsed. … I went straight to Cincinnati University Hospital. I’m talking about my stomach was so f*cked up, so f*cked up that I ended up going back home to Atlanta after the first show.”
After sharing how he was so sick he had to miss out on multiple major tour dates, Bow Wow continued,
“I get back home and the sh*t gets worse. I’m throwing up, I’m shivering in the bed, I’m sweating, I’m going through it. … I didn’t know that I was having withdrawals. That’s how much lean we were consuming.”
The “Let Me Hold You” artist added,
“I had to get right, man. God rest her soul, I had the best publicist ever, Pattie Webster. She put out a press release… [that said I dropped out of the tour] for dehydration. Wasn’t no dehydration — I was f*cked up off lean. … That’s just good PR. We didn’t want the world to know that 18, 19-year-old Bow was heavy on the drank.”
He later noted,
“My Stomach was so f*cked, bruh. It just felt like somebody had a knife [stabbing me] and I never felt this type of pain in my life, but I didn’t know that I was having withdrawals… but like I said, [in] my mind, I don’t have an addictive personality…I was consuming a lot but I didn’t know that my body needed it.”
