Chilli Faces Backlash After Correcting Fan Who Called Her ‘Chocolate,’ Says ‘Without A Tan, I’m Caramel’
Fans of Chilli are feeling some type of way about the singer’s recent skin-tone-related comments.
Singer, dancer, and one-third of the award-winning iconic girl group TLC, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas is facing criticism following a response to a comment left under a recently posted Instagram video.

The video features Chilli and her current beau, actor Matthew Lawrence (of Boy Meets World fame). Chilli can be seen dancing alongside Matthew Lawrence to the song “Jiggy Woogie” by Jamaican musician Baby Lawd.
Based upon Matthew Lawrence’s caption for the video, it seems that the couple was on vacation in Jamaica at the time the video was shot. Under the video post, the actor wrote,
“Jamaica made us do it!”

Most of the comments left by followers under the video were positive, with many fans beaming over the pair’s relationship and obvious chemistry.
One IG user wrote,
“I’m loving this couple together”

However, things took a left turn in the comments when someone left a seemingly harmless statement saying,
“Ok Matthew!! He got some chocolate now he got the moves!! I approve!!”
Chilli offered a very concise response, seemingly correcting the fan, the Grammy-Award-winning singer replied,
“Caramel”

This brief and rather simplistic remark apparently did not sit well with some as they were not reluctant to express their displeasure in the comments that followed.
One person responded,
“you wanna be lightskin so bad… sis you’re brown skin like chocolate, its okay…”

Another said,
“Girl. Love yourself”

Someone else stated,
“huh??? Girl staaap you are not caramel but deffo chocolate and nothing wrong with that”

Some came to Chilli’s defense, however, with one person saying,
“she can call herself whatever she likes. You can’t dictate to others how they see themselves. Like how strange”

Chilli returned the comments to defend herself and stood firmly by her previous remark. She said,
“chocolate is beautiful also… never said it wasn’t. But without a tan, I’m caramel. what’s the harm in being truthful? Good grief”

As previously reported, Chilli and Matthew Lawrence began dating back in November 2022 following his divorce from dancer and TV personality Cheryl Burke. By the start of 2023, the couple declared themselves to be “in love.” In March of that year, Matthew Lawrence disclosed in an interview that he and Chilli were thinking about starting a family of their own. The actor said,
“That’s the game plan. That’s what we’re trying to do.”
He went on to describe the singer as a “really, really special human being,” saying,
“Life is always a surprise. My life is in a complete bloom right now. I get to spend time with an amazing woman like Chilli. I’ve never gotten to be able to experience that kind of relationship before, so it’s quite special. She’s a really, really special human being. I wish more people on the planet were like her. We’d be much better off.”
