Update: AT&T Announces Plan To Offer $5 Credit To Customers Impacted By Major Hours-Long Outage
Update: (Feb. 25, 2024): AT&T heard your complaints!
Last Thursday ( Feb. 22) over 74,000 AT&T customers experienced no services on their devices. Reportedly, the outage started around 4 a.m. that day and lasted until around 3 p.m. ET. Following an investigation, AT&T reportedly discovered the massive disruption was caused by the “application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network.” Which basically means the entire ordeal sparked from a software update gone wrong.
In a new statement shared on their website, AT&T revealed that they plan to dish out a $5 credit to those who were affected by the outage.
“We apologize for Thursday’s network outage. We recognize the frustration this outage has caused and know we let many of our customers down. We understand this may have impacted their ability to connect with family, friends, and others. Small business owners may have been impacted, potentially disrupting an essential way they connect with customers.”
The statement continued,
“To help make it right, we’re reaching out to potentially impacted customers and we’re automatically applying a credit to their accounts. We want to reassure our customers of our commitment to reliably connect them – anytime and anywhere. We’re crediting them for the average cost of a full day of service.”
Small print at the bottom of the page added,
“One $5 credit per account on your AT&T WirelessSM account. Offer does not apply to AT&T Business, AT&T Prepaid or Cricket. Bill credits will typically be applied within 2 bill cycles.”
Original Story: (Feb. 22, 2024): In the words of City Girls rapper JT, “Mwah, no bars.”
Thousand of AT&T customers across the nation unfortunately woke up to no service. According to reports, the exact cause of the outage is still unknown. However, AT&T released a statement this morning claiming they were working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible
“Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning. Our network teams took immediate action and so far three-quarters of our network has been restored. We are working as quickly as possible to restore service to remaining customers.”
Reportedly, the outage, which severely affected major cities across the nation, started around 4 a.m. today (Feb. 22), impacting over 74,000 AT&T customers. Those who experienced the outage were reportedly unable to make or receive phone calls, text, and many even said that despite their phones having the ability to make emergency calls with no bars, they were surprisingly unable to do so. Of course, connecting to Wifi would have been a temporary solution, but many AT&T customers demanded that their full service be restored immediately.
One person on X wrote,
“I was stranded at 3am in the middle of Kansas City. I couldn’t call for an Uber or a Taxi because my cellular service provider @ATT decided to take a break today. Aye, #att get it together or I’m taking my talents to the “can you hear me now ” people.”
Thankfully, after an hours-long outage, it looks like the problem was resolved for many. AT&T recently reported that 75% of its network had been restored thus far. In a follow-up statement, AT&T said,
“Our network teams took immediate action and so far three-quarters of our network has been restored. We are working as quickly as possible to restore service to remaining customers.”
It’s important to note that some users of Verizon, Boost Mobile, and T-Mobile also reported outages, however, the number impacted is said to be nowhere near what AT&T faced.
