In a cover story for NET-A-PORTER, the ‘Black Panther’ actress explained why she chose to publicize her and ex-boyfriend Selema Masekela’s split on social media. Lupita Nyong’o expressed she was “living in a lot of pain and heartbreak” and didn’t want to make it seem like her relationship was perfect offline.
“I looked at the environment of my social media and thought, I don’t want to be a part of this illusion that everything is always coming up roses. Surely, there is a lesson for me to learn in this, and I just want to be real about it.”

Lupita Nyong’o said although she felt sure about sharing her relationship status with her fans, she may be hesitant to do that in the future.

And despite going through a recent heartbreak, the ‘Us’ actress is optimistic about loving someone again. She said,
“Our purpose in life is to love. And so you have to get back in it.”
The Oscar winner announced her heartbreak to fans in an Instagram post in October 2023. She said, in part,
“I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly distinguished by deception. I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, ‘Whatever my life is better this way.’ But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love.”

Around that same time, rumors surfaced that Nyong’o was in a relationship with ‘Fatal Attraction’ actor Joshua Jackson. The two were spotted leaving a grocery store in Los Angeles, California. They were then seen together attending a Janelle Monae concert in Los Angeles with friends.

Nyong’o and Joshua Jackson have yet to confirm or deny a romantic relationship. However, it’s been reported that the pair have been friends since 2018.
Before relationship rumors with Nyong’o, surfaced Jackson was married to Jodie Turner-Smith. The ‘Queen & Slim’ actress and Jackson married in August 2019 before she filed for divorce in October 2023.
