R. Kelly Sues U.S. Government For Seizing His Commissary Money To Pay Damages To One Of His Victims & Settle Penalty Debt
Jailed R&B singer R. Kelly is taking legal action to recoup some of his money.
According to reports, the 57-year-old is suing the US federal government, seeking to be repaid the almost $28,000 they collected from his commissary money.
As you may know, “Ignition” singer Robert ‘R.’ Kelly is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence after being found guilty of several child pornography and sex abuse charges. One of his alleged victims, Heather Williams, successfully sued the musician in March of last year, claiming the singer coerced her into a sexual relationship with him beginning when she was just 16 years old in 1998. The Illinois Supreme Court ruled that Williams, along with Kelly’s other debtors, could access his royalties and commissary funds to collect the money he owed.
However, it seems that Kelly feels the Supreme Court’s ruling slighted him and is looking to have it overturned. An announcement about the lawsuit he filed to be reimbursed the money reportedly read:
“The defendant is appealing his conviction and the government’s seizure of his substantial Bureau of Prisons commissary account to satisfy the financial penalties imposed in the case,”
Opening arguments for the case began yesterday (Monday, March 18th). At this time, it has not been reported that a court judge has ruled on the matter. Kelly’s latest court case is one among a string of lawsuits filed on the singer’s behalf in recent months. As we previously covered, Kelly is also in a court battle fighting a $10.5 million settlement he owes after being found guilty of threatening gunfire at a premiere of the docu-series Surviving R. Kelly, which chronicled his alleged abuse from the eyes of his victims.
Kelly claimed that he didn’t know the suit was filed against him, otherwise he would have taken appropriate legal action at the opportune time. Kelly is also in a legal battle against U.S. prison officials who he said leaked sensitive info about his case to YouTuber Tasha K. It has not been reported a judge has ruled on either of these matters at this time.
