Pretty Vee Sparks Controversy After Stating That Comedians Should Have The Freedom To Joke About The LGBTQ Community & ‘Certain’ Celebrities

Comedian Pretty Vee is the latest jokester to publicize frustrations about the state of comedy.

The 32-year-old spoke on the matter during a recent live video, arguing that she and her colleagues shouldn’t have to be afraid to speak on any topics relevant to the world and culture, specifically the LGBTQ community and “certain celebrities.”

Pretty Vee, real name Vena Excell, explained her perspective, stating:

“This world is so sensitive. You can’t talk about gays, you can’t talk about LGBTQ…these things is happening in real life…you can’t talk about different people you gotta stay away from these celebrities…as comedians, as entertainers, we should be able to tap in and talk about these things and bring some form of laughter to a situation that might be heavy, so that’s may job.”

She continued:

“And my job is also to bring – laughter, healing. So whatever people I can pull into that and let them know about me and tap into the word of God. I’m going to do all of that.”

The “Wild N Out”comedian joins a list of funny professionals who have voiced similar concerns. If you recall, veteran jokester Dave Chapelle had a very heated confrontation with the LGBTQ community back in 2021 due to his Netflix special “The Closer.” During a set in the stand up, the comedian joked about rapper DaBaby coming under fire for making perceived homophobic remarks, quipping that the musician “punched the LGBTQ community right in the AIDS,” among other things.

Naturally, the incident sparked widespread backlash from the LGBTQ community with many threatening to boycott Netflix if it didn’t pull the special and end its partnership with Chappelle. However, the streaming platform supported Chappelle throughout the ordeal, vowing not to censor any speech that isn’t hate speech.

Despite comedians continuing to address the issue, it seems many commenters don’t agree with their plight. Reacting to Vee’s video, social media users argued that the line between funny and offensive is often crossed which is the true root of the problem. Others argued that the issue is likely with the comics, as they should be able to still generate material without picking at minority and ostracized groups. A few, however, agreed with Vee’s stance.
