Barack Obama’s Half-Sister Teargassed Live On Air While Protesting In Kenya

Auma Obama, the half-sister of former President Barack Obama, was teargassed on live TV.

Citizens in Kenya are currently protesting against proposed tax increases (Finance Bill 2024). Unfortunately, the protests have resulted in the injuries of many and the death of at least five people thus far. According to reports, on Tuesday (June 25) five individuals were fatally shot by Kenyan police who fired live rounds at demonstrators in Nairobi. Earlier that same day, Auma Obama was teargassed by police during a live interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo.

In the footage, Auma Obama attempts to share why she’s protesting. However, as she tries to make her point, the interview is abruptly cut short due to the police teargas. Coughing uncontrollably, Auma Obama says,

“I can’t even see anymore, we’re being teargassed.”

According to a CNN report, a spokesman for Barack Obama declined to comment on the tear gas incident. A joint statement released by Amnesty International Kenya, the Kenya Medical Association, the Law Society of Kenya, and Police Reforms Working Group Kenya addressed the harsh way protestors are being treated and said,

“Despite the assurance by the Government that the right to assembly would be protected and facilitated, today’s protests have spiraled into violence. Human rights observers and medical officers have reported several incidents of human rights violation.”

Reportedly, after lawmakers voted to pass the bill many fled through a tunnel to avoid angry protesters outside. However, those who voted no were able to leave the building with no issue from the public. Part of Kenya’s parliament building was burned following the vote. Amid the chaos, protesters reportedly shouted,

“We’re coming for every politician.”
