President Joe Biden Addresses Nation Following Donald Trump Assassination Attempt: ‘We Must Never Descend Into Violence’
President Joe Biden addressed the nation from the Oval Office following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, calling for Americans to reject political violence and “lower the temperature in our politics.”
Joe Biden, in a rare address, stated,
“We cannot, we must not, go down this road in America … There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence, ever. Period. No exceptions. We can’t allow this violence to be normalized.”
He continued,
“The power to change America should always rest in the hands of the people, not in the hands of a would-be assassin … no matter how strong our convictions, we must never descend into violence.”
Joe Biden also cited numerous violent political acts in recent years, including the January 6 Capitol riot and the attack on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, emphasizing that the country’s differences are resolved at “the ballot box, not with bullets.”
Biden’s address followed an assassination attempt on former President and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 13th.
During Donald Trump’s speech, chaos ensued when gunfire suddenly broke out.
Secret Service agents swiftly rushed to Trump, taking cover on the ground behind the podium, as rally attendees screamed in terror.
Shortly after, blood could be seen on Trump’s ear and hand as he mouthed “fight” and pumped his fist in the air. He was then escorted into a nearby vehicle and transported to Butler Memorial Hospital for medical evaluation, where he was deemed “fine.”
The shooter, positioned on a nearby rooftop approximately 200-300 yards away, fired several rounds from an AR-style rifle before being neutralized by Secret Service snipers.
The FBI identified the suspected gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
One rally attendee, Corey Comperatore was fatally shot, and two others sustained critical injuries.
While it has been revealed that the shooter was a registered Republican who had previously donated to a liberal campaign group and was reportedly bullied in high school, the motive behind his actions remains unclear.
