Tory Lanez’s Driver Alleges He Didn’t See Who Shot Megan Thee Stallion In 2020 + Claims Tory Was Trying To Wrestle Gun From Kelsey Nicole During Dispute
Even more details are coming out about Tory Lanez’s case.
He is currently serving a 10-year sentence after shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot during a dispute back in the summer of 2020.
Now, the driver of the vehicle where the two had the heated exchange is speaking out.
In a new affidavit, Jauquan Smith made his first statement in the case, and claimed that he was blocked from taking the stand during Tory Lanez’s trial.
He alleged in court documents, according to All Hip Hop, that Megan Thee Stallion’s former best friend Kelsey Nicole was the one with the gun when they got into a heated exchange. Although Jauquan Smith said he didn’t see who actually shot Megan Thee Stallion, he insisted that Tory Lanez was trying to take the gun from Kelsey Nicole.
He added,
“Ms. Pete [Megan] and Ms. Harris began fighting. I pulled over to stop them. Ms. Pete and Ms. Harris both got out of the vehicle and continued to fight, both verbally and physically. I broke up this fight and was pulling Ms. Pete toward the back of the car. I saw Ms. Harris with a gun in her hand. Mr. Peterson [Lanez] ran from behind Ms. Pete and myself toward Ms. Harris. Mr. Peterson and Ms. Harris began struggling as Mr. Peterson tried to unarm Ms. Harris. I was still pulling Ms. Pete and did not see who shot the weapon. I was not harmed, and in my opinion, Ms. Pete was also fortunate. The whole incident happened so quickly.”
He continued,
“I wanted to present this evidence during Mr. Peterson’s trial but was prevented from doing so as the District Attorney was not ready to cross-examine me, and later they did not call me back due to the holidays and the court schedule. I believe I should have been allowed to present this evidence at trial.”
In light of the new statement, Lanez’s attorneys are pushing for a new trial (he was convicted in December 2022 and has maintained his innocence).
However, prosecutors are standing by their decision to not have Jauquan Smith testify, stating that Lanez’s previous attorney initially decided not to have Smith serve as a witness. The California Attorney General’s Office also said that Smith’s account was nothing new.
Deputy Attorney General Michael C. Keller added,
“Given these circumstances, defense counsel conceded that Smith would not have been a helpful witness because of his bias and the cumulative nature of his proffered testimony. Recognizing that an independent eyewitness had placed the gun in the hands of Harris prior to the shooting, defense counsel explained that it would not ‘do anything’ to have appellant’s friend say the same thing.”
