Update: Jonathan Majors Says He’s ‘Heartbroken’ Over Robert Downey Jr. Replacing Him As Marvel Villain

Update: (Jul 31, 2024): Jonathan Majors is sad he’s no longer working with Marvel.

The actor was approached by TMZ who asked about his true feelings over the breaking news that Robert Downey Jr. will step in as a villain to replace him in the Avengers film series. As previously reported, the studio pivoted away from Jonathan Majors and his character Kang the Conqueror following Majors’ domestic violence conviction. However, some reports noted that Marvel had plans to switch things up even before the verdict.

Addressing RDJ returning to the MCU to play villain Dr. Doom, Majors said he’s “heartbroken” over the entire ordeal. He continued,

“I love Kang…Dr. Doom is wicked though.”

Majors then touched on people who said it’s not fair that he was treated more harshly by Marvel than RDJ and Ezra Miller, who both have a history of run-ins with the law.

“I think it’s fair that Mr. Downey has been greeted with patience and curiosity and love and that Mr. Miller has gotten the same treatment … and that they’re being allowed to work their art and be creative at that level.“

He added,

“I didn’t really get that.”

Original Story: (Jul 29, 2024): Some supporters of Jonathan Majors believe Marvel is playing on a racial double standard.

Fans of the embattled movie star recently called out Marvel execs, arguing it’s not fair that Jonathan Majors will be replaced by Robert Downey Jr. in the continued Avengers series, despite his own criminal history.

Reportedly, Marvel made the big reveal at Comic-Con this past Saturday (July 27th). Robert Downey Jr., 59, who launched the Marvel Cinematic Universes’s success with the 1st movie from the Avengers franchise – 2008’s Iron Man – joined the studio’s president Kevin Feige in San Diego where they revealed he will be returning to the MCU as the super villain Dr. Doom, who’s commonly known from Marvel’s Fantastic Four saga.

Dr. Doom will carry the next story arch for the billion-dollar Avengers franchise, with Robert Downey Jr. being the forthcoming bad guy the super team must defeat. If you recall, Jonathan Majors was originally set to helm the next set of Avengers movies, playing the role of the villain Kang before he was fired following his domestic violence conviction. As you may know, the actor was found guilty of reckless assault and harassment following a physical dispute involving his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari during an argument back in March of last year.

While some were elated to learn that Downey will be signing on for more Marvel films, others couldn’t help but blast the double standard they feel is at play. One user, referencing Downey’s past criminal convictions, which consist of numerous arrests from 1996 – 2001 on drug and possession charges, wrote:

“Robert Downey Jr has an arrest record comparable to most career criminals so him being the replacement for Jonathan Majors only emphasizes the scrutiny placed on black people to be ‘perfect'”

In a subsequent tweet, they added:

“This tweet was made specifically for all the judgmental hypocrites that keep expressly celebrating majors being let go for his misdemeanor infractions ‘replaced’ with an actor with a wrap sheet like RDJ… We love RDJ but I also can see and reason.”

Though some seemed to agree with the stance, others argued that the Downey and Majors’ situations shouldn’t be compared because one was convicted of drug charges while the other was convicted of violent charges. Additionally, some highlighted that like Majors, Downey also went through a period where he was essentially blackballed from the industry due to his convictions, suggesting that he’s already done the time for his crimes as Majors is doing now.
