Post Malone Says ‘Culture Vulture’ Accusations Drove Him To Drink

Singer/rapper Post Malone recently discussed his experience of being labeled a culture vulture early on his career.

In a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Post Malone, 29, appeared for a chat about his upcoming country album “F-1 Trillion.” During the sit down, the musician opened up about how he dealt with the backlash of being called a culture vulture when he started his career as a hip-hop artist. He also shared how he felt being called a “one-hit wonder” following his debut with the 2015 hit “White Iverson.”

Speaking on how he felt at the time, Post Malone recalled,

“It sucked. I was a kid.”

As far as how the “Congratulations” hitmaker coped during the time, he admitted that he drank a lot of alcohol and took the criticism personally.

Regardless of the backlash, Post noted that he creates music for those that appreciates his work. He added,

“It’s not for the people who hate you. It’s for the people who love you and for yourself.”

His comments surrounding the “culture vulture” accusations come after he said that the country genre has been “accepting and kind” to him following his switch from hip-hop.

Back in 2017, Post faced criticism for his comments made regarding hip-hop in a previous interview. At the time, he said,

“If you’re looking for lyrics, if you’re looking to cry, if you’re looking to think about life, don’t listen to hip-hop. Whenever I want to sit down and have a nice cry, I’ll listen to some Bob Dylan.”

The “Rockstar” rapper later addressed the controversy and stated that he was only speaking from personal experience. He said,

“Who am I to tell you you should feel a certain way when listening to something. No matter how hard you are, no matter where you’re from, you’re going to have a time where you sit back and reflect on your life and listen to what you wanna listen to. For me, that’s Bob Dylan.”
