“I don’t know how to explain it, but speaking in tongues is sort of speaking in a heavenly language,”

Noting that she doesn’t practice the action “all the time,” Andra Day continued on, sharing how she learned about the religious “act of worship” after having have a doubtful first encounter with it. The Golden Globe winner told the story of seeing her friend’s mother speaking in tongue, stating:

“When I was younger, I was really afraid of [it] and uncomfortable…I was like, ‘This is insane.’”

She added:

“But then I got older and my relationship with God just kept growing and growing…I remember telling God, I was like, ‘I want that closeness with you. I want that heavenly language.’ So I kept doing it and kept doing it. It still felt weird…Then finally one time I really felt the spirit take over. Then it was like, ‘Wow,’ ”

She furthered:
“I would get clarity in that space…I would just hear things about what I’m supposed to do, the people I’m supposed to work with, where I’m supposed to work.”
Day also clarified that when she needed to use the skill in the movie, she specifically told Lee Daniels‘ that she didn’t want to act in the scene and wanted things to flow naturally. In The Deliverance, Day plays an alcoholic single mother who has to return to the faith she abandoned for help after her children become possessed by demons.

During a climactic moment in the film, Day unleashes a powerful prayer to Jesus that she says was an “authentic” performance that Daniels fully supported. Day says at one point while she was praying, producers wondered if they should stop her but didn’t because Daniels intervened, stating:
“Lee said, ‘No, just let her go. Lee had the foresight to capture it.”
The Deliverance is currently playing in select theaters and will be available to stream on Netflix Friday, August 30th.
