Lee Daniels Slammed After Claiming A White Character In His New Film, Portrayed By Glenn Close, Displays A ‘Fabric’ Of The Black Community

Lee Daniels is currently in the hot seat after suggesting a white character’s portrayal in his latest film represents a staple of the Black community.

In a recent post shared to X (formally Twitter), the filmmaker promoted the release of his new Netflix film The Deliverance and thanked actress Glenn Close for her portrayal of her character Alberta. The post has since sparked much criticism after Lee Daniels said Glenn Close’s character represents a “fabric” of the Black community.

He wrote,

“Every Black person knows an Alberta. She’s part of the fabric of our community, but we’ve never seen her on screen before. Thank you Glenn for bringing her magnificently to life.

Many social media users made their way to the comment section of the post to express their disappointment in Lee Daniels’ remarks. While the film is reportedly based on real-life events, users claim the woman portrayed by Glenn Close is actually Black.

One person wrote,

“This n*gg* added a white woman to a true story that did not involve a white woman then said it’s because white women like her are part of the FABRIC OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY.

He is objectively worse than Tyler Perry I’m sorry. He is like if Tyler Perry & Kenya Barris had a baby”

Noting that a documentary surrounding the true story did have a grandmother, however, she is a Black woman, another person added,

“So I’m watching the documentary about the house and the family that “The Deliverance” is supposed to be inspired by. The grandma is black… Lee Daniels is the actual villain.”

The Deliverance follows a family who move into a new house in Indiana, but they soon discover something demonic already lives there. The film was released in theaters on August 16, 2024, and began streaming on Netflix on August 30.
