‘Wicked’ Pulled From Cinema Listings In Kuwait, Media Outlets Speculate It’s Due To LGBTQ Cast
Wicked has been removed from cinema listings in Kuwait just before its scheduled release, sparking speculation that the decision was influenced by the film’s LGBTQ cast.
The highly anticipated big-screen version of the Broadway musical, directed by Jon M. Chu, was set to debut in the Gulf state after grossing over $114 million in its first two days in North America. However, local media has reportedly pointed to the film’s LGBTQ representation as a possible reason for the removal.

The cast of Wicked includes stars like Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, and Bowen Yang, which could have led to the ban, as Kuwait is known for its strict stance on film censorship.
Previously, the country banned Barbie to protect “public ethics,” and in 2023, it also banned the horror film Talk to Me due to the inclusion of a trans actor.
