Zapeta has reportedly been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and arson. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez emphasized the severity of the charges, stating that first-degree murder could carry a life sentence without parole.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is advocating for additional federal charges, calling the act “a level of evil that cannot be tolerated.”

Zapeta, who entered the U.S. illegally from Guatemala in 2018, is scheduled for arraignment on January 7.
