Ava DuVernay Shares Why She Chose Not To Marry Or Have Kids: “I Don’t Feel Like I Would Be A Good Mother For A Child”
Ava DuVernay is opening up about her decision to forgo marriage and motherhood, reflecting on how others have reacted to her choice over the years.
In an exclusive preview shared by PEOPLE, the Origin filmmaker appears on The Unusual Suspects with Kenya Barris and Malcolm Gladwell, an Audible interview series hosted by the two creators.
When asked if she would “make a different choice” if she could start her career over, the Selma director, 52, responded,
“No. I’ve never been a… he’s speaking of the fact that I am not married and I don’t have children.”

Ava DuVernay shared that people often told her she would eventually change her mind, but that never happened.
“’You’ll change your mind.’ I don’t feel like I would be a good mother for a child. I don’t want to do that and I think in the most ideal scenario, you should want to do that. I just don’t want to.”
She was also asked if her career and decision not to pursue marriage or children have made romantic relationships more difficult.
She pushed back, saying,
“No, because I’m not asking for that. If you’re looking for a husband to stand by while you’re off doing these things, I think you’re going to have a harder time, but if you’re not looking for a husband, companionship, partner…”
