Maryland Gov. Wes Moore Vetoes Slavery Reparations Study Bill, Says Now Is The Time To Focus On The Work Itself
In a move that is disappointing to some, Maryland Governor Wes Moore has vetoed a bill to establish a slavery reparations study commission, stating,
“Now is the time to focus on the work itself.”

In his veto letter, Moore explained, “I strongly believe now is not the time for another study,” citing decades of prior research and emphasizing the need for immediate action:
“Narrowing the racial wealth gap, expanding homeownership, uplifting entrepreneurs of color.”
While applauding the legislature’s work, Moore added,
“We have moved in partnership with leaders across the state to uplift Black families and address racial disparities in our communities.”
The Legislative Black Caucus called the veto a missed opportunity, saying Moore
“chose to block this historic legislation.”
Speaker Adrienne Jones responded,
“The work is not done.”
The bill passed with wide support: 101-36 in the House and 32-13 in the Senate—veto-proof margins.
