Trump Administration Gave Immigrant Migrant Data To Deportation Officials, Despite Legal Warnings
The Trump administration has come under fire for quietly handing over the personal information of millions of immigrant Medicaid enrollees to deportation officials.
Internal documents obtained by the AP reveal that Health and Human Services overrode legal objections from career staff to comply with Homeland Security’s demand — all within a 54-minute window.
The dataset includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and immigration status of people in states like California and Illinois that offer Medicaid to non-citizens using state funds.
Critics fear the move could fuel raids and jeopardize green card applications. “We should never use a person’s need to go to the doctor against them,” said Rep. Laura Friedman.
While HHS insists the data sharing was lawful, experts say it violates privacy protections and could discourage states from cooperating with future reviews. California Gov. Gavin Newsom called the decision “potentially unlawful” and said it puts lives at risk.
