D.C. Police Officers Can Now Alert ICE About Undocumented Immigrants During Traffic Stops
New policies in Washington, D.C. are sparking major debate.
Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith issued an executive order Thursday (Aug. 14) allowing officers conducting traffic stops to notify federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents about undocumented immigrants they encounter.
This marks a shift from the department’s previous policy, meaning immigrants who haven’t been detained or charged with a crime can now still be reported to ICE for possible arrest and deportation.

The move comes as President #DonaldTrump ramps up immigration enforcement, federalizing D.C.’s police department and positioning ICE to patrol alongside local officers.
