UPDATE: Former NBA Player Stephen Jackson Says Lil Yachty Apologized For George Floyd Lyric After Private Conversation: ‘We Moved On From It’
Update: Stephen Jackson says the controversy over Lil Yachty’s George Floyd lyric is resolved after the rapper apologized.
“I spoke to him. He’s a smart young man… He made a mistake, he apologized, and we moved on from it. It’s over with,” Jackson said on Instagram Friday. “Won’t be doing no interviews… Let it go. Stop calling my phone.”
The lyric, “Put my knee up on her neck, I went George Floyd,” was played during Yachty’s livestream Thursday and drew immediate backlash.
George Floyd’s brother, Terrence, called the line “inconsiderate” and said, “Let my brother rest in peace. It disturbs the family’s peace.”
Jackson, who grew up with Floyd in Houston’s Third Ward, had also criticized Yachty before their conversation.
“You think… using his name in a bar… gonna make people like your… music? That sh*t weak,” he said. Floyd died in 2020 after former officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for over nine minutes, sparking global protests.
