Spurs’ Luke Kornet Urges Atlanta Hawks To Cancel “Magic City Night”: The NBA Should Desire To Protect & Esteem Women’
The #AtlantaHawks is facing pushback over its upcoming night honoring the famed strip club, Magic City.
San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet is publicly urging the Hawks to cancel its “Magic City Night” event, arguing it sends the wrong message about how women are valued in the #NBA. Kornet posted an open letter on Medium calling on the Hawks to rethink the event, writing, “The NBA should desire to protect and esteem women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world.”
In his letter, Kornet said the league should create an environment respectful to the “daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love.” He also warned the collab could make the NBA “complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society,” and urged fans and teams to hold the Hawks to a higher standard. Kornet added, “Regardless of how a woman finds her way into the adult entertainment industry, many in this space experience abuse, harassment, and violence to which they should never be subjected.”
The Hawks will pay tribute to #MagicCity during their March 16 game against the Orlando Magic. Attendees will have the chance to try Magic City Kitchen’s famous traditional Lemon Pepper wings, and T.I. is set to perform the halftime show.
