Lauryn Hill Owes Nearly $900K In Tax Liens + Now On Repayment Plan After Canceled Fugees Tour Reportedly Hurt Cash Flow
Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill is addressing a sizable tax debt years after her highly publicized federal tax case, with her team confirming she is currently following a state repayment plan.
Records from the New Jersey Division of Taxation show two active tax liens filed against the artist. One lists an unpaid balance of $133,246, while the second totals $758,912.02 — bringing the combined amount owed to nearly $900,000.
Hill’s spokesperson addressed the situation in a statement, saying, “Ms. Hill is complying with a repayment plan she entered into with the State of New Jersey to resolve state income tax liabilities incurred after cancellation of a tour, which greatly impacted the tour’s cash flow.”
The financial issue appears to stem from the planned 2024 reunion tour featuring Hill and the Fugees, which was canceled shortly before the first scheduled show.
The update comes more than a decade after Hill’s previous legal battle over taxes. In 2012, she pleaded guilty to three counts of tax evasion after authorities said she failed to file tax returns on $1.8 million earned between 2005 and 2007. Hill later served time and was released from federal custody in October 2013.
