DO get a straight-up status report.
In this day and age, I ask anyone I date right away: ‘Are you married? Are you in a relationship with anyone? Does anyone think they’re in a relationship with you?’ And by the way, if someone says, ‘Yes, I am dating other people,’ that’s not necessarily a deal breaker. But you have to communicate it, not hide it.
DON’T let infatuation take over.
When I meet a man, I take a piece of paper, and on the front I write the facts of him. On the back I write the fantasy of him. The fantasy column is for things like: ‘We ran into a friend who has a kid, and he was so cute with that kid—he’s going to be the best father to my children! We both like lemony, salty food—we have the same taste! This is going to be a great partner for the rest of my life!’ It’s like, No, honey. You just had a good dinner. Keeping the facts differentiated from the fantasy is incredibly helpful in gathering your information as you discover if a person is a match for you.
DON’T forget to let him impress you.
Culturally, women are taught to get men to want us. Instead of worrying about whether he calls, I really practice turning the tables and asking myself, Do I like this person? Does this work for me?
