Gabrielle Union On BET’s “Being Mary Jane” Lawsuit: I deserve to get paid just as much as a man.
The show must go on! Gabrielle Union says despite suing BET over her Being Mary Jane contract, filming will not be impacted. In a recent interview she stated,
I’m a pro and we all go to work and season 4 will air January 10th on BET and hopefully in the meantime we can sort out some business that’s fair and reasonalbe and equitable to not just me, but to our whole cast and our writers and our crew.
Here’s the clip.
In a separate interview, she explained why it’s important that she take this type of stand,
My mortgage. My mortgage alone (laughs). I put in the same hours as most men and if not more. And I deserve to get paid the same. Equal pay, equal work. And that’s how it should be. And if you stand up for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.
As previously reported, Union filed a lawsuit claiming that BET violated her contract by forcing her to work back to back seasons without a break in production. The suit claims that although her contract calls for no more than 13 episodes a season, the network ordered 10-episode fourth and fifth seasons of the series to be shot back-to-back. Union says that she and the network agreed to those terms, as long as she got a break in filming.
