“Black Panther” Record Breaking Weekend, Earns Over $387 Million Worldwide
“Black Panther” Top Grossing Film In History By A Black Director
“Black Panther” won at the box office, literally. The Ryan Coogler directed film has recorded the second best Sunday ever at the domestic box office with an estimated $59.55M per industry estimates Sunday night. The film comes behind the all-time record held by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
Global ticket sales by Monday will total an estimated $387 million, according to comScore. Ticket sales for the film in North America will total roughly $218 million between Friday and Monday. “Black Panther” is now the the top-grossing film in history by a black director (Ryan Coogler) and featuring a largely black cast. The previous record-holder was “Straight Outta Compton,” which earned $214 million worldwide in 2015 — over its entire run — after adjusting for inflation.
Coogler stated in a recent interview,
The concept of an African story, with actors of African descent at the forefront, combined with the scale of modern franchise filmmaking, is something that hasn’t really been seen before. You feel like you’re getting the opportunity of seeing something fresh, being a part of something new, which I think all audiences want to experience regardless of whether they are of African descent or not.
