Deion Sanders Potential Candidate For Florida State Coaching Job
Prime Time is back! NFL Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders has been reportedly named as one of the potential hires for the head coaching position at his alumni, Florida State University. The coaching position became available following the firing of former head coach, Willie Taggart midway through another lost season going 9-12 through a season and a half. The final straw came last week (Nov. 2th), after the Seminoles’ disappointing home loss to rival Miami, 27-10. Not even a full week later, FSU has their eyes on hiring their former standout and NFL legend. According to NFL insiders,
“NFL Network analyst and Hall of Famer Deion Sanders has emerged as a candidate for the Florida St. head coaching job, sources tell me and Mike Garafolo. A fascinating situation that could unfold.”
The potential addition of signing Deion Sanders would be welcomed by the fan base. As one of the greatest athletes in the history of FSU, Sanders played football, baseball and ran track during his four years at the school from 1985 to ’88. After the rumors of his signing were reported, NBA star, LeBron James took to Twitter to endorse the hopeful, “Prime Tie Era,” to begin at FSU. He writes,
“Man, it would be so dope and just seems PERFECT for Prime Time to be the HC of FSU! I mean right?? One thing about it, he would get in any household on the planet to talk with a kid/parents.”
As one of the college and professional football greatest athletes to hit the field, Sanders does lack coaching experience. Outside of his youth football programs and winning back-to-back TAPPS Division II state championships at Trinity Christian-Cedar Hill High School as offensive coordinator, the NFL Hall of Famer experience is questionable.
In 2003, Deion went public with his desire to coach,
“I know the things that really need to be done there. I put so much time into preparing every week for my Sunday job, watching tape and talking to players and coaches, that I still live football. It’s still a big part of me. I talk to head coaches and assistants, guys with whom I’m close, every week. I know what the job involves, believe me, and I know I can do it.”
Since he retired for good in 2006, Sanders has primarily worked as a television analyst for NFL Network. FSU retired Sanders’ No. 2 football jersey, and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
