Spike Lee Directing 1980s, Hip-Hop Version Of ‘Romeo & Juliet’
Spike Lee stays working!
This time, the famed director is reportedly gearing up for the release of a new version of the classic romance Romeo & Juliet. Of course, he’s putting his own spin on things.
Lee’s film, titled Prince of Cats, will take place in the 80s and will be centered around the Hip-Hop scene.
It will tell the story of Tybalt and his brothers, fellow Capulets, as they find their way through Da People’s Republic of Brooklyn, which has a secret world of fighting, especially against their arch enemies the Montagues.
The underground environment also includes breakdancing, graffiti, DJing and emceeing.
It will be an adaptation from the novel that was previously written by Ron Wimberly.
Lee is slated to team up with Wimberly and writer Selwyn Sefu Hinds, the previous editor-in-chief off The Source magazine, for the movie version.
Prince of Cats comes off the heels of Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, which was released in 2018 and earned Lee his first Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
It was also nominated for Best Picture, and Lee snagged a nomination for Best Director.
