Jay Z Tried “Very Hard” To Get With Aaliyah, Says Dame Dash

Jay Z (real name Shawn Carter) had a crush on the late singer Aaliyah, according to Dame Dash. As you know, Aaliyah died in a plane crash in 2001. Prior to her untimely death, she dated Dame Dash. In a recent interview, Dame explained that Jay Z was interested in the singer. He tells Page Six,

“He tried very hard. I did not mean to fall in love with Aaliyah, she was just that cool. But you know, we were both going hard … everybody was trying to get to Aaliyah — it was not just Jay.”

He continued, explaining what attracted him to Aaliyah.

“She was just cool as hell … we would laugh … we never stopped hanging and that is what happened with her. There was never any obligation or any title … just liking being around somebody for who they are. I was not in love with Aaliyah through the television — I fell in love with her from hanging out and meeting her. She looked different than Aaliyah on the TV screen.”

As far as Jay Z, Dame says

“I did not know Jay was trying to holler at her, but then it just happened like that. He was trying, I was trying. Everybody was trying — he was going hard.”

This isn’t the first time there’s been discussion about Jay Z’s alleged romantic interest in Aaliyah. Former Roc-A-Fella Records producer Choke No Joke told former Hot 97 host Troi Torain (formerly known as Star) that Dame Dash seduced Aaliyah away from her relationship with Jay Z. He claims Dame tried to pull the same stunt with Beyoncé, and as a result, was banned from being around Queen Bey. Choke said this about Dame’s sneaky moves on Beyoncé:

“I mean nothing happened like he kissed or sexed her or something like that. Did he try to holler at her? Yeah…That’s the same thing he did with Aaliyah.”
