49ers’ Katie Sowers to Become 1st Woman in NFL History to Coach a Super Bowl Game
San Francisco 49ers assistant coach Katie Sowers will make history this upcoming Super Bowl LIV as the first woman coach in NFL history. On Sunday (Jan. 19th), the 49ers guaranteed Katie Sowers part of history when they defeated the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game. Sowers and the Niners are now set to face off with the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2.

Sowers, 33, is just the second woman to hold a full-time coaching position in the NFL. Last November, Sowers spoke on being one of two full-time female coaches,
“When you ask any of the coaches who work with me, often they’ll get asked about working with a female. To them, it’s not even something that they think about — and it’s not something that I truly think about. They see me for who I am as a coach, and not a female coach.”
Since Sowers’ move to the 49ers in 2017, four more women entered the NFL coaching ranks. 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo touched on Sowers interaction with players.
“What she does with the receivers, all the skill position guys, how she interacts with them, you know, it’s special.”

Before going into coaching, Sowers played with the 2013 U.S. Women’s National American Football team that won the International Federation of American Football’s world championship game by defeating Canada 64-0.
A hip injury led her to retire in 2016, but she was invited to be an intern for the Atlanta Falcons, where she met Kyle Shanahan, who later hired her when he became the 49ers’ head coach.
“Katie did a real good job for us in Atlanta, she’s done a really good job here. She helps [passing game coach] Mike LaFleur out, just with some rotations, and she helps our quality control [coaches] out just with all the stuff they have to do.”

He continues,
“She’s a hard worker, you don’t even notice her because she just goes to work and does what’s asked.”
