EXCLUSIVE: Lena Waithe’s “Twenties” Series Will Allegedly Be Renewed For Season 2
EXCLUSIVE: Lena Waithe’s BET Series “Twenties” Allegedly Renewed For Season 2
theJasmineBRAND exclusively reports that “Twenties”, one of BET’s new scripted series is allegedly getting a second season. Sources tell us that there were already allegedly talks for a renewal prior to the first episode airing.
The comedy, which is the brainchild of director and actress Lena Waithe, tells the story of a film writer Hattie, who’s in her 20s, and her BFF Marie and Nia going after their dreams in the City of Angels.
The pilot premiered on BET on March 4 to very strong numbers, which likely helped solidify the show. The first season will wrap on April 22 after the eighth episode.
“Twenties” stars Jonica T. Gibbs as Hattie, Christina Elmore as Marie and Gabrielle Graham as Nia.
Big Sean, Kym Whitley, and Iman Shumpert also had recurring roles.
Lena Waithe, 34, previously told The New York Times of the series:
“This is our world post my character on ‘Master of None;’ it’s a world post ‘Get Out’; it’s a world post ‘Moonlight’. This is the first time a masculine-of-center black woman has been the center of a show on prime-time TV.”
The show found a home in BET after TBS decided not to pick it up after the pilot in 2018. It was also shopped at HULU, who opted out of securing it.
Lena Waithe added,
“You kind of get a pass, for some reason, if there’s a two in front of your age. That, to me, is where you can really decide ‘fight or flight’: in your 20s.”
The show has been a dream of hers for the past decade. She said,
“I was so eager at the time. I was like, ‘Why not?’ Like, ‘Why not have a show like this?’ But obviously the world really wasn’t ready yet — who knows if they’re ready now? I think so. We’ll see.”
