Tiffany Haddish Says ‘Girls Trip’ Cast Is Writing The Sequel After Studio Said ‘You Guys Want Too Much Money’
It’s been nearly three years since the epic film Girls Trip was released. And it might be even longer before we see a highly-anticipated sequel.
The film marked Tiffany Haddish’s breakout role as she starred alongside Jada Pinkett-Smith, Regina Hall, and Queen Latifah. While she recently said that she only made $80,000 in the first movie, she suggested the studio said the cast wanted too much money in the sequel. The studio was reportedly waiting for the script to move forward, and while Tracy Oliver, who served as co-writer for the first one with Kenya Barris, was ready to. move forward, it sounds like the studio had a change of heart. Tiffany Haddish said,
“Then it was like, ‘Oh, you guys want too much money,’”
Interestingly enough the four leading ladies caught up with each other amid the nationwide quarantine and spoke for more than two hours. There, they decided they would work on getting the film done themselves. Tiffany Haddish added that they might take a different route depending on the response for the sequel.
“We might decide not to even make it ‘Girls Trip.’ Maybe we’ll do a different story just in case no one wants to make ‘Girls Trip 2.’”
Regina Hall said in 2018 that they’re all for a second installment of the hit movie.
“We’re trying to make that happen. We’re trying to get everything together. You know, the schedules, I think they’re working on some things so, yeah. I don’t know where the girls are going but we’re going somewhere. The girls are coming back!”
The movie’s executive producer, Will Packer, also spoke on a possible sequel just after the original film’s release,
“We’re definitely talking about it. The only thing harder than opening a studio comedy today is opening a studio comedy sequel. That’s the next challenge. I love our team. If anybody can do it, we can do it. It’s still a little early — the movie is still in theaters — but it’s something we’ve all thought about.”
