On the heels of her latest album release B 7, Brandy,41, says that it took her 8 years to finish the album, because she was “lost” musically.
“I was a little bit lost eight years ago musically, creatively, spiritually, I had to pull myself together, I had to pull it all together and make it all make sense.”
Brandy welcomed her daughter Sy’rai in 2002, with then partner, producer Robert Smith. Although the pair portrayed that they were married during the filming of a reality show while Brandy was pregnant, Robert Smith later revealed that they were never married. Brandy says,
“It changed people’s perspective of me, but I had to focus on what was important, which was Sy’rai.”
Brandy also spoke on the 2006 car accident that took the life of a 38-year-old woman. Although the singer wasn’t charged criminally, the case settled out of court with the woman’s family. Brandy says following the breakup and car accident, she recalled an “insurmountable” amount of pain and even contemplated suicide.
“I remember laying in bed super depressed, I [told] myself, ‘So, you’re just going to go out like this? That’s wack. You have a daughter. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for her because this is not the way to leave a mark in her life.'”
Brandy says that her daughter is what pulled out of a dark place,
“If Sy’rai wasn’t here, I wouldn’t be either, the place that I was in, it just felt like I wasn’t going to make it through.”
Brandy says that she wondered did she get too candid with her latest album,
“I was thinking, ‘Did I go too deep? Did I go too far in what I was singing about?’ But I didn’t dwell on those thoughts.”
Adding,
“I’m in a place now, where I can be proud of moving in the right direction.”
Brandy is currently celebrating the release of her album, as well as the first 6 seasons of hit 90’s sitcom Moesha landing on Netflix. The series’ star Brandy is hinting that their may be a reboot in the works.
