’12 Years A Slave’ Writer John Ridley Suggests Batman Will Be A ‘Person Of Color’ In His Upcoming Comic Book
12 Years A Slave writer John Ridley is working on a new Batman comic book, and there’s a pretty good chance the star character could be a person of color. He said of the 4-part comic book series while on DC FanDome’s “Legacy of the Bat” panel:
“I think it’s a pretty safe bet that, if I’m writing Batman, it’s probably a little better than a 47% chance he’s going to be a person of color.”
If so, this will be the first time a person of color takes on the role of Batman. But it wouldn’t be the first time a person of color is involved int he franchise. Morgan Freeman played Lucius Fox in Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy.

Camrus Johnson played the same character in the “Batwoman” series on The CW.

John Ridley added:
“This is a family that has secrets, has kept secrets from one another. It’s a little bit different dynamic than the Batman that we’ve always seen.”

Zoe Kravitz
Last year, it was reported that Zoe Kravitz was tapped to play Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film “The Batman.” The 30-year-old actress will star opposite Robert Pattinson as Batman.
In the past, the Catwoman character has been played by Anne Hathaway in 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises” and Michelle Pfeiffer in 1992’s “Batman Returns.” Halle Berry played the role in 2004’s Catwoman.
John Ridley’s project is scheduled for a January 2021 release.
