Waiting To Exhale TV Series Inks Deal With ABC, Lee Daniels To Produce
The Waiting to Exhale series is moving right along.
Actress Loretta Devine, who starred in the original movie with Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon and the late Whitney Houston, was the first to reveal that a revival was in the works.
She said:
“Well I know Terry [McMillan] and I think Lee Daniels are working on something because she’s been trying to get Waiting To Exhale back for so many years. And because it changed so much for everybody. Not just black women but also, so many shows came out of that with the same girlfriend format that they use.”
She continued,
“But I think they’re doing something about the kids of the women, and I think that’s going to be coming out so look forward, there’s a lot of stuff that is being developed to look forward to.”
Terry McMillan, who wrote the novel that later inspired the classic film, later confirmed on Twitter that the reboot is a TV series that Lee Daniels will produce and Attica Locke and Tembi Locke will write.

Now, it looks like the series has garnered a deal with ABC.
According to Deadline, ABC has issued a script commitment with penalty for the show, so Lee Daniels is subject to a deal.
The series is described as a funny and sincere follow-up to the film, and will this time tell a group of women as they navigate through friendship with each other and motherhood.
The Lockes, Lee Daniels and Marc Velez will serve as executive producers under Lee Daniels Entertainment, Hemingway as well as Richard Abate, Jermaine Johnson, and Will Rowbotham of 3 Arts.
Terry McMillan will come on board as consulting producer.
