Eddie Murphy Rejected Ryan Coogler’s “Coming To America” Sequel Idea: He Wanted Michael B. Jordan To Play My Son – It Didn’t Come Together
In a recent interview, Eddie Murphy revealed that he declined an idea pitched to him about the ‘Coming To America’ sequel by Ryan Coogler.
The 59-year-old comedian and actor explains,
“[Coogler] had an idea for Michael B. Jordan to play my son and he would be looking for a wife. I was like, then the movie would be about the son, it’s not our characters, we already did that. It didn’t come together.”
The original film debuted in 1998 starred Eddie Murphy and co-starred co-stars Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, and John Amos.
Eddie Murphy explains
“The way the story ended was kind of like, ‘And they lived happily ever after’. Then all this time passed and the movie became this cult thing. Catchphrases from the movie start working their way into the culture. Stores turning themselves into McDowell’s [where Prince Akeem worked.] I see Beyoncé and Jay-Z dressed up like the Zamunda characters for Halloween.”
The official sequel, “Coming 2 America”, stars Eddie Murphy, along with Arsenio Hall, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, Shari Headley, Teyana Taylor, Wesley Snipes, and James Earl Jones.
