Young Thug & Gunna Team Up To Release 30 Low-Level Offenders In Atlanta
There’s nothing better than hearing about celebs giving back.
From Chance the Rapper’s donation collaboration with Justin Bieber for those impacted by his COVID-19 to Michael Jordan’s contribution to combat voter suppression, the list will forever be endless for good deeds done around the world.
Atlanta natives Young Thug (born Jeffrey Williams) and Gunna (Sergio Giavanni Kitchens) teamed up to post bonds for 30 inmates held at the Fulton County Jail this past weekend.
The hip-hop stars’ act of kindness was contingent on the type of offenses made by both men and women. They discovered that many of the inmates were being held on minor charges but had no money to bail themselves out. Young Thug said,
“This is where we are from. We just woke up and went to the jail with the lawyer and you know DA’s and the prosecutors, you know, the bonding companies and just got as many people as we can out.”
Thug and Gunna, who are labelmates for YSL Records, reunited the inmates with their families. Gunna added,
“You never know what somebody been through. There was people sitting out three or four years and couldn’t get out on a bond. If they did the crime, then they can do the time, then it’s all right. But it’s like you’re giving them a bond higher than what they stole.”
Local Atlanta station, Channel 2 News, got an inside look at the Fulton County Jail, back in March where the inmate capacity exceeded nearly 2,900 inmates; that’s 400 over the capacity.
Atlanta councilman member Michael Bond told the news station,
“This is some of the worst conditions I’ve ever seen.”
Not stopping there, Gunna and Young Thug helped serve the newly released inmates home-cooked meals and put them in an upcoming music video. Young Thug said he believes he’s doing the work of God by serving the people.
“It feels so food to the point where you start feeling that’s why God put me here. He put me here to do this.”
The rappers plan on repeating their actions with hopes that others within the music community will do the same.
