Dave Chappelle Reflects On Stand-Up Special Inspired by George Floyd: It Was Gut-Wrenching
Dave Chappelle recently opened up about his feelings surrounding the George Floyd-inspired stand-up special he organized last year.
As you may recall, Dave Chappelle performed a stand-up special called 8:46 that was inspired by the injustices of police brutality and racism–specifically in the case of George Floyd, who was murdered by former officer Derek Chauvin. 8 minutes and 46 seconds has since become a symbol within the Black Lives Matter movement, as Derek Chauvin had his knee on George Floyd‘s neck for approximately that long.
Last night (Wednesday, May 12th), Dave Chappelle appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and addressed his intentions behind the well-received project. After explaining that he wanted to use his voice to speak on the matter, Chappelle explained how it felt to go through with such a pursuit, calling the experience “weird” and “gut-wrenching.” He stated:
“It was a weird process. I didn’t expect that I would put anything out, but it became a thing where I wouldn’t feel right telling jokes until I addressed that because people listen to me different and that was one of those moments where I understood that and we let it rip. It was gut-wrenching putting it out to be honest, I was real nervous about it, but I’m glad that I did.”
While the 8:46 special may have weighed heavily on Dave Chappelle, it looks like he has no regrets over the experience.
