WNBA Star Brittney Griner Meets With U.S. Officials For First Time Since Being Detained In Russia, Athlete Said To Be ‘In Good Condition’
New details have recently surfaced surrounding Brittney Griner’s detention in Russia.
According to reports, an official from the US embassy in Moscow found professional basketball player Brittney Griner, 31, to be “in good condition,” after they were granted consular access to the WNBA star yesterday (March 22). Reportedly, this is the first time Brittney Griner has received official government access since she had been detained by Russia last month.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price spoke on the situation and said,
“We were able to check on her condition, we will continue to work very closely with her legal team, with her broader network, to see to it that she is treated fairly.”
He added,
“Our official found Brittney Griner to be in good condition and we will continue to do everything we can to see to it that she is treated fairly throughout this ordeal.”

As previously reported, on February 17 two-time Olympic gold medalist Griner was detained at a Moscow airport after Russian authorities claimed they found vape cartridges while searching her luggage. Reportedly, the cartridges contained oil derived from cannabis, which could carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Last week a Moscow court extended the arrest of Griner until May 19 while an investigation takes place, according to Russian news agency TASS.
