Wanda Sykes Says Chris Rock Apologized To Her For Will Smith’s Oscar Slap: ‘It Was Supposed To Be Your Night’
Wanda Sykes is among the list of celebrities adding their two cents on the Will Smith and Chris Rock Oscar controversy!
During a recent appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Sykes, who hosted the ceremony along with Amy Schumer and Regina Hall, said Chris Rock approached her at an after-party to apologize for the altercation. Sykes explained:
“I hope he doesn’t mind me saying this, but I saw Chris at (entertainment manager) Guy (Oseary’s) party and as soon as I walked up to him, the first thing he said was, ‘I’m so sorry”’.
She continued,
“And I’m like, ‘Why are you apologizing?’ He’s like, ‘It was supposed to be your night. You and Amy and Regina, you all were doing such a great job. I’m so sorry. This is now going to be about this.’ Because that’s who Chris is.”

Wanda Sykes also had an issue with the fact that Will Smith– who would go on to win best actor for his role in “King Richard” less than an hour later– was not forced to leave the show. He was able to accept the award and apologize for his behavior in his speech.
“For them, to let him stay in that room and enjoy the rest of the show and accept his award, I was like, ‘How gross is this? This is just the wrong message. You know, you assault somebody, you get escorted out the building and that’s it. But for them to let him continue, I thought it was gross.”
As previously reported, Will Smith made a shocking move Sunday night (Mar. 27) when he charged onto the Oscars stage and slapped legendary comedian Chris Rock across the face. The assault came after Rock joked to Smith that he was looking forward to a sequel to “G.I. Jane,” making a jab at Jada Pinkett-Smith’s shaved head.
After sitting back down, Smith shouted at Rock to “keep my wife’s name out of your f*** mouth.” Jada reportedly suffers from alopecia and has previously been very vocal about how the condition has affected her life.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science publicly condemned Will Smith’s behavior and announced their would be a “formal review”. In a statement released Monday (Mar. 28), the Academy stated:
“The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”

Will Smith, Chris Rock
While Wanda Sykes acknowledged that Will Smith has since apologized to Chris Rock, she says Smith also ruined the event for her, Schumer and Hall.
“No one has apologized to us and we worked really hard to put that show together, yeah, so the industry itself, I’m, like, ‘What the hell is this?’”
