‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Trailer Sets Record As It Garners 172 Million Views In First 24 Hours
Chadwick Boseman‘s legacy lives on in the trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The teaser trailer for the Marvel sequel was released on July 24 and received 172 million views on its first day. It nearly doubled the 88 million views the first Black Panther teaser had in 2017, making it one of the greatest superhero movie trailer premieres in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Fans were left teary-eyed off the trailer alone, which opens with a “No Woman No Cry” cover by Nigerian singer Tems and transitions to Kendrick Lamar‘s “Alright.”
According to Marvel’s official overview of the film, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke) and Okoye (Danai Gurira) are among the forces who will battle to defend their country from interfering foreign powers following the death of King T’Challa.
The group will work together with the aid of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) to pave a new course for the kingdom as Wakandans attempt to embrace their next chapter.
King T’Challa was played by Chadwick Boseman, who passed away in August 2020 from stage 4 colon cancer.
Chadwick Boseman‘s inability to work on the upcoming film reportedly devastated film director Ryan Coogler, who, like many others in the industry, wasn’t aware the actor was sick.
In his tribute to Boseman, Ryan Coogler said,
“I didn’t know what was going on. I knew what he wanted me to know. I miss him in every way that you could miss somebody, as a friend, as a collaborator. And it sucks because I love watching movies, and I don’t get to watch the next thing he would have made. So it’s grief on a lot of levels, but then, it’s a deep sense of gratitude because I can close my eyes and hear his voice.”
He remembered his friend and colleague as a true team player who was always checking in on others, even while battling his own illness. Ryan Coogler previously opened up about filming the sequel without his friend, saying,
“It’s difficult. You’ve got to keep going when you lose loved ones. I know Chad wouldn’t have wanted us to stop. He was somebody who was so about the collective. Black Panther, that was his movie. He was hired to play that role before anybody else was even thought of, before I was hired, before any of the actresses were hired.”
