Brittney Griner Seemingly Unsure If She’ll Return To The WNBA Following Prison Release: She’s Reintegrating Into A World That Has Changed For Her, Agent Says

Brittney Griner may be free at last, but that doesn’t mean that she’s revisiting the court any time soon.

On Thursday (Dec. 8), Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner departed a Russian prison in a one-for-one swap for infamous arms dealer Viktor Bout. Reportedly, the tediously-awaited exchange, which was approved by President Joe Biden, happened in the United Arab Emirates.

For those who don’t know, in February 2022, Brittney Griner was detained at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Lobnua, Moscow Oblast for illegally carrying vaporizer cartridges, containing hash oil, in her suitcase.

Of course, it’s been a long time coming for the wrongfully-done athlete. After ten months of a tumultuous legal battle, Griner’s initial nine-year sentencing has finally come to an end. However, when it comes to what the next steps are, the 32-year-old is said to be taking it day by day.

Although Griner indulged in a basketball workout over the weekend, according to her agent Lindsey Kagawa Colas, the Houston, Texas, native is in no rush to head back to the WNBA. Instead, Griner is enjoying things away from her career and spending time with her loved ones — including her wife, Cherelle. Her agent Colas reportedly said,

“If she wants to play, it will be for her to share. She has the holidays to rest and decide what’s next without any pressure. She’s doing really, really well. She seems to have endured this in pretty incredible ways.”

She later expanded,

“There’s no timeline on her return at this point. She’s reintegrating into a world that has changed for her now.”

Subsequent to Griner’s return, her partner took to Instagram to express her overwhelming excitement to be reunited with the love of her life.

Additionally, having undergone such a traumatic experience, Griner’s representative indicated that her current focus is readjusting to society and learning how to navigate after her incarceration stint.

Colas continued,

“From a pure security standpoint, she’s not going to be able to move in the world the way she did. It’s not fate that she asked for, but I think she’s going to try to utilize her fame for good.”
