Will Smith To Star Alongside Michael B. Jordan For ‘I Am Legend’ Sequel Despite His Character Dying In Original Film, Producer Reveals Project Will Follow Alternative Ending
The concept of the second “I Am Legend” film will be different from how the original movie ended.
Filmmaker Akiva Goldsman detailed in a recent interview that the “I Am Legend” sequel will focus on an “alternate ending” rather than the “released ending,” which means Will Smith’s character will be back! Akiva Goldsman said:
“This will start a few decades later than the first. That will be especially visual in New York. … I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the Empire State building, but the possibilities are endless.”

Goldsman continued:
“We trace back to the original Matheson book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the released ending in the original film.”
He added:
“What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That’s a really interesting thing we’re going to get to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text.”
During the premiere version of the film, Will Smith’s character dies attempting to protect two survivors, as well as a promising cure for the virus that affected the world. People affected by the virus turned into Darkseekers. Meanwhile, the DVD release revealed an alternate ending, where Will Smith’s character, Dr. Robert Neville, actually lives and manages to escape to freedom. Reportedly, in addition to starring in the film, Smith and Michael B. Jordan will serve as producers alongside Goldsman as the screenwriter.

The original film, released on Dec. 14, 2007, became the seventh-highest-earning film of that year, earning $585 million at the global box office.
