Tory Lanez Allegedly Receiving ‘Cruel & Unusual’ Punishment In Jail Due To His ‘Celebrity Status,’ New Attorney Says: ‘He Hadn’t Seen Daylight In Four Months’
An attorney who sought to join Tory Lanez’s defense team is claiming that he’s having a hard time behind bars.
According to legal reporter Meghann Cuniff, a lawyer named Ronda Dixon recently drafted a motion petitioning for R&B star Tory Lanez’s release.
As you may know, Tory Lanez is awaiting sentencing (set for Aug. 7) after being found guilty of shooting rapstress Megan Thee Stallion in her feet. On December 23, 2022, he was convicted of three felonies: assault with a semi-automatic firearm, possession of a concealed, unregistered firearm, and negligent discharge of a firearm.
In the proceedings, Ronda Dixon was said to have described Lanez’s jail experience as “unconstitutional,” and she even accused his current representation (Jose Baez, Matthew Barhoma) of taking advantage of his situation.
During a conversation with legal affairs journalist Meghann Cuniff, Ronda Dixon expressed,
“These guys are just taking advantage of [Lanez]. They’ve had him sign powers of attorneys. They’re acting on his behalf. They’re not really asking him what he wants.”
Reportedly, Ronda Dixon wanted to replace Lanez’s counsel Matthew Barhoma, but a hearing that took place on Wednesday (Jul. 12) kicked against her aspirations.
Instead, Los Angeles County Superior Judge David Herriford opted for Ed Welbourn, a criminal defense attorney, to substitute for Matthew Barhoma and accompany Jose Baez.
An article from Meghann Cuniff documented that Dixon cited “evidentiary errors” and violation of the California Racial Justice Act as the reason(s) behind her push for a new trial that would (possibly) let the “Say It” phenomenon off the hook. She (seemingly) believes that Lanez is undergoing “cruel” and “unusual” punishment because of his social caliber.
When meeting with Lanez, Dixon recalled,
“His eyes were black, He was totally despondent. He told me he wanted to go to state prison. I said, ‘You want to go to state prison? Why?’ He said, ‘At least I’ll be able to go out in the yard and talk to people.’ That upset me. I don’t think he’s guilty.”
Additionally, since Dixon hadn’t been brought on as an official representative of Lanez, Meghann Cuniff tweeted that Judge David Herriford never accepted her motion, and Jose Baez refused to endorse it.
Dixon told Cuniff,
“[Lanez] has to be shackled and he has to be accompanied by a sheriff and two deputies to move. He told me he hadn’t seen daylight in four months, that they didn’t take him to the day yard at all. That’s doing something to his psyche.”
Following Cuniff’s report of Dixon’s (alleged) words, Lanez’s team issued a statement from his Instagram account.
The brief blurb read,
“With all due respect… please disregard anything [Meghann] Cuniff reports on Tory Lanez. Her objective, perspective/narrative has always been negative and extremely biased towards him.”
It continued:
“If there is an update on Tory it will come from this page first. If it doesn’t come from this page, it’s not real.”
