Whoopi Goldberg Doesn’t Think ‘Barbie’ Star Margot Robbie & Movie Director Greta Gerwig Were ‘Snubbed’ By Oscars: ‘You Don’t Get Everything That You Want To Get’

According to legendary actress Whoopi Goldberg, you win some, you lose some.

If you didn’t know, Oscar nominations for 2024 recently came in, and ‘Barbie’ film phenomenons Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were nowhere to be found in their respective categories.

As previously reported, the fantasy comedy — written/directed by Greta Gerwig — graced theaters last July, with Margot Robbie serving as the blockbuster’s lead actress and producer.

Since its release, the billion-dollar production has been uber-successful in its effort to reshape feminism and the controversial conversations surrounding it. However, the Oscars’ failure to recognize two of the box office hit’s most important figures has sparked social mayhem.

While ‘Barbie’ stars Ryan Gosling (who portrayed Ken) and America Ferrera received nominations for ‘Best Supporting Actor/Actress,’ Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were absent from the ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Leading Actress’ lists.

Although Robbie and Gerwig (along with her husband, Noah Baumbach) were granted group spots on the sections for ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Adapted Screenplay,’ many were let down by the Academy not highlighting them individually.

In a statement, Ryan Gosling spoke out on the matter and said,

“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films.”

He later added:

“But there is no Ken without Barbie [portrayed by Robbie], and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

Hollywood icon Whoopi Goldberg (who’s also a known Academy holder/board member) addressed the hoopla during an episode of ‘The View.’

The EGOT winner expressed,

“They’re not snubs, and that’s what I want to sort of point out. And it’s not the elites… it’s the entire family of the Academy Awards who votes for ‘Best Picture’ nominations, okay? We all vote for ‘Best Picture.’ Everybody! So, there are seven to ten nominations that happen, and you don’t get everything that you want to get. You know?”

She concluded:

“Not everybody gets a prize, and it is subjective. Movies are subjective. The movies you love may not be loved by the people who are voting.”

This year’s Oscars ceremony is set to air on Sunday, March 10.
