Update: President Joe Biden Signs Bill To Ban TikTok Unless App Is Sold

On Wednesday (Apr. 24) President Joe Biden signed a bill banning the Chinese-owned app TikTok unless ByteDance agrees to sell it. The technology company has a little under a year (270 days) to sell its stake in TikTok or risk the popular video-sharing platform being banned in the US. However, as the deadline approaches, if ByteDance hasn’t finalized the sale but has shown great progress toward doing so, the president can extend the time frame by 90 days.

The TikTok measure was included in a wide-ranging foreign aid package meant to support Israel and Ukraine. According to a report from CNN, “bundling the bill with the foreign aid — a top US priority — fast-tracked the TikTok bill and made it more likely to pass.”

Original Story: (Mar. 13, 2024): The House of Representatives has passed a bill that could ban TikTok in the United States. But despite some support, it has also sparked strong opposition from users of the popular social media platform.

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act would require its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell TikTok within six months or be banned from U.S. app stores and web-hosting services.

The measure reportedly passed with 352 in favor and 65 opposed, underscoring its broad bipartisan support. In addition, 197 Republicans and 155 Democrats voted to approve it. One member voted “present.”

It’s unclear what the measure’s fate will be in the Senate, but President Joe Biden has vowed to sign it if it reaches his desk.

Meanwhile, TikTok users have voiced their concerns on X, formerly known as Twitter, insinuating that the government’s priorities aren’t in the right place.

An X user wrote,

“So banning TikTok is more important than Mass shootings, NOT funding a genocide, feeding children, protecting human rights, affordable housing, free healthcare, better road infrastructure, fixing employment & getting rid of student debt.”

On the other hand, some people don’t feel the TikTok ban is a bad thing. They believe it will help them and others be more productive instead of being on social media all day.

An X user wrote,

“i might actually get work done now bc all i do is scroll on tiktok all day and then i realize i didn’t do anything at all by around 8 pm”

Someone else who supported the potential ban wrote,

“I feel like I’m gonna get sh*t on for this. But the tik tok ban is a good idea. It’s a hyper-addictive platform thats melting the minds of younger people. Yes I’m aware it has some good things, but in the end of the day, it’s really bad for the future.”
