Judge Who Handcuffed Teen For Falling Asleep In His Courtroom Demoted To Traffic Court

Judge Kenneth King, a Detroit judge who disciplined 15-year-old Eva Goodman for falling asleep in his courtroom during a field trip is still facing consequences.

Although he has officially returned to the bench after being suspended from the courtroom last month, he is now assigned to cases related to minor offenses like speeding tickets, per AP News.

He was also ordered to undergo social-emotional training.

Judge William McConico in a statement.

“We appreciate his efforts in preparing for this role, and wish him success as he transitions into this new responsibility.”

An attorney for King, Todd Perkins, said he has no problem with his new position and

“truly understands and wholeheartedly embraces the concept of teamwork.”

During last month’s incident, King sent Goodman to jail and put her in handcuffs. He also warned that she’d go to juvenile detention before letting her go. Her mother, Latoreya Till, later explained that her daughter was most likely tired because they didn’t have a permanent address. She filed a lawsuit for more than $75,000 for “inflicting fear and severe emotional distress.”

Meanwhile, King previously defended his decision, calling it “my own version of Scared Straight” and offered to mentor Goodman.
